FFS, I told myself last night that I wasn't allowed to think about this, but... I can't believe it's been ten years - ten years - and people are still demonising and threatening people who dare:

1. Read Smashed in a way that Buffy is not a victim.
2. Analyse Buffy/Spike on its own individual basis of a relationship between two characters in a fantasy world rather than something solely contextualised by impersonal sociological narratives.
3. Suggest that they find Spuffy hot.

And the whole thing's been brought about by someone who operates on the assumption that we're all dense enough to believe that he 'forgot' he knew about SR when he started shouting at people for having different views about Smashed.

I'm so angry.

All I've got is my video which I like to think indicates that Spike's sarcasm vs. Buffy's violence has been their game for a long time:

Tell me they both fuck up in S6, but don't tell me either is fully taking control.

God, why do people pay attention to that dude?

I stopped a while ago, but it was interesting in the early days to have someone 'new' to the fandom so vocally squeeing about it. Most people seemed to get bored with his self-absorption pretty quickly (myself included), but apparently he had some good commenters following along and offering ideas.

I know exactly what you mean, though! I should have left well alone.

To be fair, I have not followed his writing that closely, but he does seem to have the 'I'll check this fandom out and explain why everybody else's opinions are wrong.'

I remember naively watching Spike/Buffy and being into it and not being aware of all the fannish controversy. And then when I discovered it, it kind of scared me away from the ship. It is complicated, and in the hard-to-talk-about way, not the fun-complicated way.

I was so happy just liking Spike/Buffy. Then people came along and told me that it was wrong to like them. I still like them, but it was people all up in everybody's faces about how Spike was horrific abuser who was taking complete advantage of a Buffy who lacked anything resembling free will or decision-making capabilities who made me stop being an ardent follower, reader, etc.

Rants are good things!

Heh. I think this is the reason I developed a very acute anti-(my)Spuffy-dar in fic and a taste for the back button - after a while I just stopped running into stuff these people had written.
