Because I was bored and so faffing around with iTunes -
out of stuff I've bothered to keep on my iPod that
even though this became quite difficult by 2008
2001 - New Born (Muse)
Origin of Symmetry is the sound of 2001, with the post-millennial guitars and angsty chord progressions. Say I'm wrong!
2002 - Go with the Flow (Queens of the Stone Age)
Zane Lowe recently had Songs for the Deaf as one of his modern classics/best albums the baby boomers didn't make/something... He is right. Moreover, the videos were EVERYWHERE, ALL THE TIME, YESSSSS. Kerrang had competitions for people to play Josh Homme-esque guitar solos down the phone. I've never been quite sure why this video is so OTT in its softcore-porn-done-in-posterised-colours; there was something going on with sperm all over the album art too. It probably just is what it is, although there's a lot going on in the album about cliché...
2003 - Pin (Yeah Yeah Yeahs)
I suppose Date with the Night is the more famous song, but the video for this captivated me the first time I saw it. And after the histrionics of the last few years, the YYYs are at the forefront of cutting things back. Karen O!!!
2004 - Golden Touch (Razorlight)
Sorry. But it was ALL THE TIME. And quite catchy. Starting to push that 60s-retro sound (and the pop-art videos) now, which dominated the mid-2000s.
2005 - I Predict a Riot (Kaiser Chiefs)
Also everywhere. I remember that my friend C hated the chorus and would always say they should have cut it. Everything was basically retro about now, and northern preferably.
2006 - I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor (Arctic Monkeys)
Out of which rose the Arctic Monkeys. It was about now I stopped watching music TV, so I don't remember videos much at all. This song was everywhere.
2007 - Brianstorm (Arctic Monkeys)
And then 2007 happened and... I stopped knowing where to look for new music? It was actually very slim pickings for this year. Even though Favourite Worst Nightmare is my favourite Monkeys album, I don't really remember it dominating the world; Brianstorm's here because it was a pre-release on MySpace and I listened to it round and round and round and round.
2008 - Crimewave (Crystal Castles vs HEALTH)
While on MySpace, I discovered CC!! They had four songs which I annoyed my family by listening to lots (although once was enough for them) until the album was released. I hadn't realised at this point that MySpace was not a sustainable source for new music. Mostly because it kind of was, actually.
2009 - Remedy (Little Boots)
When they played this on Dollhouse I actually recognised it, so it seeped in from somewhere! 80s synth revival was on a high.
2010 - Paradise Circus (Massive Attack ft. Hope Sandoval)
All adverts. All incidental music. That crime drama with wotsisface that had nice cinematography but slightly crap writing. All you need is the pong-pong-ponggggg.
2011 - Shipwreck (Modeselektor with Thom Yorke)
So, I apparently have practically nothing for 2011. No wonder I was so miserable towards the end of my MPhil. Got to this track via a music blog; think it's a good representation of what the Radiohead equivalent for these days sounds like. No one can be arsed with lyrics, but the melancholy's nice.
2012 - Ashtray Wasp (Burial)
True also with Burial, though we're really hitting the vinyl/analogue revival now, which has pushed into this year. Glitches!! Caught my breath the first time I heard those on this record.

A Personal History of the Last ~10 Years in Big Tunes
out of stuff I've bothered to keep on my iPod that
(a) I bought at the time (or close enough)
(b) remember as important
even though this became quite difficult by 2008
and I was listing to an awful lot of 70s punk basically throughout this time period
and I went through AFI and Bad Religion as favourite bands (mostly for their back catalogues)
