I am now the possessor of a ridiculous number of jelly beans. It's very fun.
I can't really think of much to say about this episode, really. I wouldn't rate it as high as last week's, but I wouldn't rate it all that low either. The engagement was so-so as far as interest (though it does answer a question I've been pondering - do the actives think they have friends? Apparently when they need them they get invented!), but I quite liked all the other bits of the episode. I liked the senator (name hasn't stuck yet) and his wife, though I wonder whether they aren't too 'nice'. I wouldn't mind an angle soon. I really like Madeline and her return - hopefully she's going somewhere cool; I'm sure she'll kick arse when she does so. And, oddly enough, I really liked Echo in this episode - ie. Echo with all her mother instincts in the final ten-fifteen minutes.
I mean, the thunderstorm was unnecessary and the knife was very weird (oh, that knife-wielding assassin has so much to answer for), but that whole scene with Nate at the end seemed nicely understated (if that's the right word considering the thunderstorm) - it could have easily been an action-y re-run of last week (or indeed the bit in the police station). Having said that, I'm beginning to think these engagement-going-wrong episodes might be starting to get less believable. I know there have been fewer than it might seem at first, but considering the Dollhouse sells itself by word-of-mouth recommendation there can only be so many before you start wondering where all the satisfied customers are...
I wish there had been more Topher in this episode, with someone he pings off better than Ballard (Ivy and Claire - you were missed). Because his marvellous catastrophe was sort of interesting in a bland sort of way. I think there was more to get out of that particular off-shoot from plot. That Topher thinks about curing cancer is a good, I suppose, but then the telekinesis?? And the shrugging off 'you live and learn', not to mention the endless positive feedback loop where him screwing up just proves he's better than he thought he was. Scary thoughts - would have liked more on that.
I did like that the DeWitt-Madeline conversation was such a clear Bechdel win (I think I may grow to <3 Madeline and she looked so wonderfully buxom in her blue suit), especially when compared to the Echo-Sierra conversation (poor Sierra had next to no character at all). If we could only have more Ivy-Sierra-Boyd interaction (with less of the racist Brit imprinting...). And other minorities - let's deal with one of these homosexual fantasies, and not in in a brief shiny-shiny Echo/Whiskey way. Actual people and feelings and mess.
All in all, not my favourite episode, I don't think, but we'll see what next week brings!
