So, last week [livejournal.com profile] shapinglight was chatting about the new E4 programme Misfits. I'm not sure this deserves the 'meta' tag I've given it, but is much more reflective on the premise rather than an actual plot review.

I enjoyed it again this week. I very much like that it's coming across as if they all definitely deserve their ASBOs, even if we find ourselves seeing things from their perspective. I'm not entirely sure why twazzock boy seems to be the primary POV character though; hopefully they'll start switching it up each episode.

I keep wondering about their 'powers' though, because it feels like there's some sort of relevance for each of them, though I can't quite spot the pattern. Weird kid turning invisible seems to work with both the way that people ignore him and as a reflection of the fact he's a complete perve. Athlete guy being able to turn back time seems to go well with him probably having the most regrets in the group, as well as fitting in with him being a really fast runner. A lot of chav girl's story seemed last week at least to be about people judging her or her thinking people were judging her, so her being able to read minds fits into that sort of idea as well. Party girl with her flirting and sex jokes has something in that sphere as well (though I'm still wary of how they're dealing with that plotline, because it seems to want to set up rape as uncontrollable lust caused by women wearing skimpy clothes, which is a completely wrong message). What really struck me in tonight's programme, though, was how the storm didn't affect twazzock boy; it's just affecting everyone around him. It seems like too much of a coincidence not to be dependent on his character, especially when everyone else's powers are taken into account.

Also, moving on from that, I think it's very interesting that the girls' powers are all about the way other people react to them, while the boys' are all individual things (or if I'm right about twazzock boy, even about affecting other people). I can't tell whether this is unconsciously showing or making an actual point about they way women in our society are always made out to be much more easily projected on and much less capable of having their own individual selves. (There's a post I really want to make about the commentary surrounding Belle de Jour's de-anonymising, that's very much about this point, but that might have to wait for another day. Though it's only twenty to eleven; maybe I'll start it now...)
