Ah, so the internet was slightly on the blink again this weekend, but what did I decide to do? Make a 55-second vid for sb_fag_ends, to Siouxsie and the Banshees' Playground Twist!! Spuffy, naturally; early S5 to be exact; warnings for quick cutting images.

Awesome vid and perfect song. And thank you for putting in the sentence that solves it - power's supposed to repel people - because I really love it when vids accompany well-defined thought I can grasp.

Thank you!! And I'm so glad the summary sentence made it click. I'm never certain I'm getting my message across with vids, because I think I tend towards the non-literal/esoteric (for which read 'meaningful only to me') and always have to try and drag myself back; I really want to make where I'm coming from clear with my ironic little italics, but, again, I shy away from attaching any clear statement to the video, because I don't want to pin it down. So, if it made sense to you, then I have won! :D

Heh, my main problem with vids is that my interpretation is generally very very literal. Poetry, too, I keep trying to solve poems rather than just experiencing them. (I had nightmares about The Wasteland. They were very literal and contained sleds and Istambul.) So very abstract vids can be pretty and well-synchronised, but I can't enjoy them fully because I kept getting simultaneously annoyed at them for being unsolveable and at myself for being unable to turn off the mathematician part of my brain.

In conclusion, thank you for your ironic ~italics~, they absolved me from much woe. <3

Well, I'm all for solving things! I'm into things having multiple meanings (on a fine-detail level), but really not into things being ambiguous enough to resist meaning, if that makes sense. Like, I would never put something together that actively didn't make sense to me (if pushed, I could explain every clip choice in this vid and mark out the story it's telling), but I want to communicate with the viewer rather than make them nod dumbly while I tell them things. But then I'm happy for a solution to come in the form of a mood (as long as that mood has a narrative/some sort of through momentum) or the expression of another question... The Wasteland is like that for me - I'm not sure I could explain the 'point' of a lot of it, but as I read it it definitely is something to me - and that something is always the same even as it evolves on repeated readings.

One of the reasons I'm not a big fan of lyrics in vids is I feel they can be too show-and-tell, like a commentary rather than part of what's going on (and sometimes, I feel, you end up with the images hanging off the lyrics with no story of their own). I know I tend towards abstract vids (and I think people possibly think that's what I make), but like you I don't watch actually abstract pretty-clips-to-the-music vids because the lack of narrative frustrates me. If my vids are received as abstract, then it's a flaw rather than an achievement, basically...

Mmm, totally, conversations rock, but I really enjoy just being a passive audience too - I'm still in the honeymoon phase where the very form of vidding delights me, and I am only a little bit ashamed that I know all of Scooby Road by heart. (Which, as far as I can tell has no deeper meaning to decypher than "Beatles rock and so does Buffy, yay!" Well, also some vague racial/gender/shipping commentary, but nothing too revolutionary. Except the Willow/Giles bits. I <3 the Willow/Giles bits.)

I adore multiple interpretations. And clearly bogus ones that work. [The Wasteland? Totally about Aragorn, Arwen-as-hyacinth-girl, Numenor-as-Unreal and all.] Emotion-as-solution doesn't quite satisfy me though usually, except in Plath's Tulips for whatever reason.
