I'm meming like it's 2005 at the moment; still, something to do, right?
bogwitch and I decided it would be fun to play Desert Island Discs, only with albums rather than single tracks, because having only eight songs for eternity would be enough to send anybody jumping for the sharks...
Let's go:
1. Favourite Worst Nightmare - Arctic Monkeys
When I'm not holding it against them for giving me tinnitus (to be fair it was their support act), I love the Monkeys. Guitar music meets dance rhythms plus Alex Turner's (usually) fantastic lyrics. Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not was a brilliant album to start with, but Favourite Worst Nightmare blew it out of the water. Humbug doesn't hit the same level, but they've got to have another one in them somewhere...
Favourite Track: If You were There, Beware
2. Moving Targets - Penetration
I never hear anybody in the world ever talking about Penetration, but they were a random punk find from mooching around the internet. And they're just good. Reasonably melodic, reasonably upbeat and they do fabulous covers of Buzzcocks' Nostalgia and Patti Smith's Free Money, both of which are on this album, so yay! However, they shouldn't really count as my favourite tracks, so...
Favourite Track: Future Daze [the first track on this video]
3. Akhnaten - Philip Glass [Staatsoper Stuttgart]
ningloreth actually didn't rec so much as mentioned this just recently, but it's really got into me. I have this strange love of countertenors. And altos. And, sometimes, minimalism. Generally I'm not a fan of opera, but this is so different to any other I've heard. Possibly I'll grow bored of it in a year or two, but, hey, the island's not actually real...
Favourite Track: Act 1 Scene 3: The Window of Appearances [this is a shortened version]
4. Amputechture - The Mars Volta
The Mars Volta... Mate, they are awesome, for at least the first three albums, which didn't make much sense on the first listen, but after a while you just sink into them. Prog rock with an injection of Latin elements and Spanish every now and then. Amputechture, I think, is supposed to be the album that scared them off concept albums, because it wasn't very well received. But it's their best. So, so hard to pick a favourite, because it's all about the combo, but...
Favourite Track: Meccamputechture
5. Filthos Lusec Wecos Vinosec [Final Fantasy VIII Orchestral Soundtrack] - Nobuo Uematsu
Don't judge me!! I actually don't own this album, because it's always been hard to source, but I might have to try and find the mp3s one of these days. FFVIII... My love for this game is very deep and the music even moreso. The whole soundtrack is amazing, but the orchestral selection is just another step up, with all the extra variations etc, so it would be the thing keeping me company on the island. I'd miss the game version of The Man with the Machine Gun, because the orchestral version isn't quite as good, but Blue Fields mostly makes up for it. When I'm nostalgic on a beach, this is what I'd listen to.
Favourite Track: The Oath
6. Radio Ethiopia - Patti Smith Group
I'm always surprised how much I return to this album, but I do actually love listening to it. It's for those mellow moods that aren't actually downbeat, but you just want a bit of a cathartic sing. Patti of course needs no introduction... I've heard that this particular album isn't favoured by people, but I don't really like much after this and think it's better than Horses. The lyrics are fabulous! Little drug addled in places, but you could probably say that about a lot of my list...
Favourite Track: Ain't It Strange
7. Germfree Adolescents - X-Ray Spex
Because sometimes you're angry. Not much more to say, but I love the rawness of this album, even when I'm not paying attention to some of the slightly miss songs (Highly Inflammable - what is your point?). Sometimes you just want to yell 'my mind is like a plastic bag' at an antisocial volume. I'm not missing out on that on my island!
Favourite Track: Identity [what else??]
8. Fever to Tell - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
This is a bit of a strange last choice, because I'm not entirely sure how highly I'd rate this album next to the others. It's good, but is it only-eight-albums-in-the-world good? The thing is, this is one of the few albums I have with a real sense-memory attached to it. For some reason I was listening to it over and over when my mum and I went to New York, quite a while ago now, and whenever I listen to it I have this memory of this smell and that holiday. I'm not entirely sure what the smell is, possibly aeroplane, but it was a fab time and I'd like to keep it with me. Also, Karen O's vocals are in their entirely own class, to be fair.
Favourite Track: Rich
And that's that! I think I picked wrong...
